The cabrio look with a hard-top

Citroen's C5 Airscape concept, which was shown at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, reveals the French carmaker's design thinking for its next executive cabriolet.

While it does have a history of building folding hardtops,this concept is the first sign that Citroen is re-establishing itself in this niche market.

The carbon-fibre roof,while one of the most interesting pieces of engineering on the car,sits alongside some other innovative technologies,including Snow Motion-a traction control system that provides a level of traction close to that of a four-wheel drive.

Other innovative technologies include Citroen's Urban Hybrid unit prevents noise and vibration when the engine stops and boosts engine torque when the same time,it is environmentally friendly.

The profile of C5 Airscape reflects Citroen's efforts to achieve optimal aerodynamic design. The roof line, particularly large windows, and tapering chrome-plated door handles underline the flowing lines of the body. The high waistline, the clearly marked wheel arches and 19-inch wheels all reveal the company's attempt to define the concept as a vehicle of status.

The design of the folding roof is of particular glazed upper part lets light flood into the cabin and , while this will not be carried through to production , the roof is made entirely of folds away automatically , without assistance, and without the driver having to open the upper part of the roof storage area in the boot . The roof is designed with a metal-look exterior and a textile lining to resemble a roof made of cancas from the imterior. This is in an attempt to combat the modern problem of ensuring the design of the emtire vehivle flows when viewed on the road whilst also having the fabric look roof that buyers of executive cabriolets still desire.

Under the bonnet,the 208bhp 2.7-litre V6 HDi diesel engine is coupled with a particulate filter and is able to run on bio-diesel. When taken with the Snow Motion traction control system and CO2 emissions , the concept boasts high levels of performance while also being environmentally sound.

With its reversible alternator-starter and super-capacitors able to temporarilly store large amounts of energy,the UrbanHybrid system delivers real benefits in terms of environmental protection, driving pleasure, acoustic comfort and vibration control.

In Drive mode , when this voncept vehicle is travelling at under 6kph and the driver's foot is on the brake pedal , the engine cuts out . For maximum drivealility, it starts again instantly and automatically as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal. When the car is at a standstill, fuel consumption is zero and CO2 emissions are around 24g over a combined cycle.

Further, the onboard network (air conditioning , radio , etc.) is powered by energy recovered during the deceleration and braking phases. This brings savings in fuel consumption and eliminates additional pollutant emissions.

Engine torque can be temporarily boosted , when overtaking for example , for a high-speed take-off.

When the car is at a standstill , the UrbanHybrid system prevents noise and vibration in the cabin , for the comfort of both passengers and passers-by.

The executive positioning of C5 Airscape is reflected by the presence of the engine and particulate filter.
